London at Christmas

Not been to London over Xmas or done much touristy stuff in years and have some relatives coming over wanting a guide.
Any tips on Buses to catch for a cheaper tour than the tour buses, party of 8 a bit pricey!!
A route for the xmas lights as well would be great. Any suggestions, decent stuff to see at Christmas much appreciated

You're probably better off getting the tube between landmarks over busses. Yeah you're underground but probably won't see any less than you would out the steamed up windows of a crowded bus at night in London.

Just had a weekend with the missus in Wandsworth (stayed up there for the Rugby) … spent our hangover day on the Sunday walking the Thames path and Battersea park… had a walk up to the Battersea Power station… boy that’s changed since last time I saw it… very festive there at the mo with markets, stalls and ice rinks etc…

Get a tube to Covent Garden, walk through there - it's lovely this time of year - walk down the Strand to Trafalgar Square and the tree, walk to the Haymarket and up to Piccadilly Circus and walk down Bond Street and turn left into Oxford Street. You'll see the Bond Street lights as you pass on the way to Bond St station. Then go into Selfridges where your family will buy you a couple of drinks at the Champagne Bar to thank you for showing them the sights. While there, the area between James Street and Duke street is great for a meal or drink and a festive atmosphere. I then usually do Marylebone High Road while I'm there but I'm hardcore London at Christmas. For a detour at Piccadilly Circus walk down Piccadilly and go into Fortnums and stock up with expensive biscuits. You could walk down Bond Street to join up with Oxford street from there. Yea, you could get a bus but why?

Heard the 73 bus is a good route to see the sights from.

Number 11. Starts in Liverpool St ends in Victoria. Goes past Mansion House, BoE, St. Paul's, West End , Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and Houses of Parliament. Takes an hour or hop on and off en route.

Albertopolis, nearest tube South Ken, full of eateries, opposite The Natural History, the V&A & the Science Museum, 5 minute walk Kensington Gardens, Harrods Xmas department, Knightsbridge lights, shopping. Knightsbridge tube home. All day FREE!

If its for looking at the lights the 139 goes down Regent St from Oxford Circus on the way to Trafalgar Square

We went skating at Canary Wharf a few times.

I had not been in years (skating) so I enjoyed it though my wife kept falling in my arms.

Always tended to go to St. Johns Bread and Wine in Spitalfields after.

Start off with tea at fortnum and mason on Piccadilly, then 2 min walk to Piccadilly Circus then walk up Regent street pass the Cafe Royal and Hamleys all the way up to Oxford street, turn left on Oxford street and walk up to Selfridges and Mark and Spencer for their window displays. On the right hand side.

St. Christopher’s place is near by, some nice Restaurants and Cafe’s and pubs there for a quick beer or bite to eat.

Across the street you would have just passed Bond street, so I’d walk back and take a stroll down Bond Street for the lights and window displays…. Their use to be vendors on the street roasting chestnuts when I worked on Wimpole st, this was many years ago mind.

Depends how old the relatives are and if they can walk any distance!!

Always like the South bank at night and decent at Xmas.

Number 8 and 10 buses can get you to the Xmas light areas if you're coming from Liverpool St way if memory serves me right.

Took the Mrs when she had her first xmas here after arriving from Aus then did the same a couple of years later when her daughter came to visit. That was enough, wont be doing it again in a hurry.

Good shout about the boat. There might be something nice to do or see in Greenwich or Kew. Opposite ends of the city obviously but worth a look to see what's on.

As others have intimated, walk Oxford/Regent Streets to see the lights then find a decent off-the-main-drag boozer for a beer/bite to eat.

Everything else is pure and blatant commercialism.

Boat trip up/down the river would be my preference.
